Really Guts You
Last weekend was a girls family weekend with my daughter at college. Some of our plans involved going to the bar to meet friends and parents, tailgating, a football game (brag moment: MIZZOU has the longest winning streak in college football) and more. I was really worried ahead of time and projected all my angsty anxiety about alcohol and my kids into fury before the weekend. Many sober folks would avoid these environments and that's cool but I didn't want to. To each their own. We get to do our sobriety our own way.
I talked to both my 19-year-old and 16-year-old daughters. I talked to my friend, who was joining me in the weekend festivities. I talked to my husband. I talked to my sober friends. I journaled. I cried. I ruminated. I worked myself into a spiral over it and then everything turned out better than I imagined because my girls don't care that much about alcohol and they do care that much about me.
Their story is not my story. This was my big lesson. I am so in awe of my girls' and their steadfast support of me. I wrote a blog that I needed to see myself on this tricky subject, Talking to Teens About Alcohol: A Sober Mom's Perspective.
This week's Peripeteia Podcast Episode dropped this morning. The first person to listen was my producer, Laura Silverman, who said, "Wow! This episode is beautifully heartbreaking. Really guts you."
She's right. I am really proud of the guest, who is my friend Gootch for putting herself out there and sharing her story. We were both sobbing and shaking when I hit publish this morning.
The most supportive thing you can do is to share it with someone (or more). There are women out there that need to hear it and this is how we will collectively spread the word. Thank you so much!
Content / trigger warning: this episode discusses emotional abuse, domestic violence, and suicide. Please take care of your own needs without judgment and feel free to skip if it’s too much for you.
Leaving an Emotionally Abusive Marriage
I forgot, until she reminded me, that I was Gootch's HR coach in our first job after college way back when. I guess I always had the coach in me. If you are considering becoming a certified coach, I have a 20% discount with your name on it. This offer expires the end of this month. Please reply to this email if you are interested in learning more.
Big update: I now have an official podcast sponsor! Yay! I am thrilled to partner with Sunnyside, which is the #1 Alcohol Moderation App in the US. I have a special offer for you, a free trial!
Will you please do me a favor and download the Sunnyside Free Trial? Let me know what you think! I've been exploring it over the past few weeks and I think it has so many great features for anyone looking to change and track their drinking.
I am sorry so many of the links did not work last week. I will try again this week.
To explain myself, there was a change in technology here and I had to catch up with it. I've been out of state for 3 out of the last 4 weekends. I am offering more free resources than ever with a weekly blog post, a weekly newsletter, and a weekly podcast. To be clear, something will be missed and as Nora McInerny says, "there will be typos." I appreciate your grace.
Speaking of, I have 5 Freebies on my website that you should go grab now!
My day job is still coaching, business mentoring, speaking, training workplaces, running two community memberships, being a mom and domestic goddess and more. LOL. I love it. I really do.
I am accepting one more 1:1 client in the next month. Preference always goes to the Insiders first. Why haven't you signed up yet? It's free to start, and cancel anytime.
I sure do pile it on, but no worries, I have also given myself a chance to rest by binge-watching A Perfect Couple on, Netflix. Loved it. I am allowing myself to rest. The rest periods are when the healing happens so I am making a conscious effort to give myself more of that too.
