What I've learned from coaching 300+ women (a 4th of July truth)
Hi friend,
After coaching more than 300 women through getting sober, I can tell you the thing almost no one wants to hear on a holiday like today:
A good intention isn't enough.
I know, because I had the best intentions going into every 4th of July I ever ruined. Just a couple. I'll pace myself. Intentions don't hold up against a cooler, a crowd, and years of habit. What holds up is a plan and a person. A real strategy for the day, and someone who knows you're not drinking and is waiting to hear how it went.
Here's the other truth I've watched play out 300 times over:
You will not live your same life sober. And thank God for that.
When you stop drinking, everything reshuffles. At first that feels like loss. But then you start prioritizing your sobriety the way you once prioritized the next drink, and something wild happens. You start to love your life. Not the old one with the alcohol removed. A new one. One you build. And it's better than the one you're grieving. You just have to trust that before you can see it.
So for today, one piece of hard-won advice:
Do not go to the same places with the same people and expect yourself to sit quietly in the corner nursing a soda while everyone else drinks. That's not willpower — that's a setup. You will lose that fight, and it isn't your fault.
Find something better instead. Just for this year.
Stay home. Tuck in. Make the strawberry dessert. Take the bath. Watch the movie. Do the puzzle. Skip the festivities entirely and call it self-respect.
And if the old voice whispers that you're missing out—remind it that next year you can always go back to drinking. You know exactly where that road leads. You've driven it. So give yourself this one holiday to try the other way.
You will never regret not drinking today. Not once. Not ever.
Keep your promise to yourself. Take care of your damn self, for once.
I'm in your corner today.
Heather
