Make the Most of Sober October (free, Wednesay)
Hi friend,
I had vertigo this week due to an inner ear infection, and it forced me to do the impossible. Slow down.
It reminded me of a great technique to use in early sobriety called "playing sick." Cancel the plans. Go to bed. Move slow. Expect nothing of yourself except rest, sobriety, and tender loving care.
Let the dishes sit undone. Don't do a hard workout if you're not feeling it. Let yourself be; get through a week, then two. Then do the dishes if you're up to it. Take a walk around the block if you are ready to move a little, or not.
When I first quit drinking, my goals were not impressive.
I wanted my head to hit the pillow without hating myself. I wanted to wake up without punching myself in the face first thing. I wanted to give myself a chance at having a good day.
That was it. That was the whole vision board.
I've been thinking about that as Sober October gets close, because I think we make these challenges too big and too grim. White knuckles. Perfect streaks. A whole new personality by Halloween.
It doesn't have to be that. It can just be a month of paying attention.
So I'm teaching a free workshop on how to make the most of it.
How to Make the Most of Sober October Wednesday, September 30 · 7 pm CT · free, on Zoom
Whether you're starting your first challenge or you're more than a decade in, this is for you. Because October doesn't have to be about alcohol.
We'll look at the things we reach for—the sip, the scroll, the sugar, the shopping, the sitting. (Already alcohol-free? Skip the sip. Pick another one.)
And then the things we do to ourselves about it, which is where the real work is. The self-critic. The sabotage. The shhh—all the ways we quiet ourselves. The shame.
Willpower gets you through a weekend. Paying attention gets you through a life.
Come live and you'll get a one-sheet to work through with me during the call. Can't make it? Register anyway and I'll send you the replay.
